How good is your Personal Trainer? Find out now!!

I have seen some brilliant Personal Training sessions where the trainer has implemented a tremendous workout for their client, delivering the
much sought after “Wow” factor! Training sessions such as these don’t happen by accident. They’re administered through proper planning, research, and an
awareness of the client’s goals and exercise preferences. For every session I perform I spend a quality amount of time planning that
session. Many of my clients like a lot of variety so I will take the time to research exercises or choose from hundreds stored on my computer. Through
proper planning and an awareness of my client’s goals I can really hit their hot spots and that is the key for great Personal Training sessions.

Unfortunately I’ve also seen some dire Personal Training sessions, void of any thought, variety, planning, or without any concern for what their client is
trying to achieve. It is easy for the trainer to fall into ‘automatic pilot’ especially if they are administering many Personal Training sessions backtoback. I’ve seen trainers give the same workout to all their clients over and over again without any thought or insight into developing a new, fresh and
challenging routine. Each session should be like Christmas for every client, and delivered with passion, enthusiasm and spirit.

I ask my trainers how they would change their Personal Training sessions if they were being paid $1k per session. What would they do differently to
deliver a truly wonderful exercise experience? I recently took a client into a private studio for a tremendous boxing and kickboxing session with a circuit added and it produced a really enthusiastic response.I’ve listed below what I consider bad practice by Personal Trainers, check to
see if your trainer is falling short!

• Inadequate or no assessment of the client. Body fat %, weight, body measurements, BMI, blood pressure, etc. should all be assessed prior to
commencing a new physical activity regime.
• No record of previous workouts. All trainers should be recording each session in order to keep the files updated and to monitor what is being done in each
session.

• Trainers who use their mobile phones, or do any sort of personal multitasking during your session should be fired immediately. You’re paying them for your time, not for them to sort out their personal lives.

• I discourage trainers from working out with their clients unless their client desires it to be so. I’ve seen a few trainers give their clients workouts with their own goals in mind rather than training the client for their goals.

• Trainers who continue to use old fashioned bodybuilding exercises with clients whose goal is not to build muscle size are demonstrating a significant lack in exercise prescription.

• Trainers should be reassessing their clients after 6 and 12 week periods. This gives the client something to work towards and the trainer can set goals with the client for each 6 week block.

• Trainers should always present themselves with the utmost professionalism. Appearance should always be as sharp as possible, shirts ironed, training shoes clean, males should be cleanly shaven, breath should be fresh, hair tidy, and they should practice what they preach!

• Any trainer selling drugs or supplements that are potentially dangerous should be banned from personal training altogether!

• Trainers should never turn up late for any session. If they’re sharp they will leave a 15 minute window for each session as they need time to wash their hands, check their breath and get organized for your training. I always remember my mentor telling me, “If you’re on time, you’re late. If you’re 5 minutes early, you’re on time!” Hopefully the aforementioned points will help you to assess whether your trainer is sharp, up with the pace, and delivering a 5 star service, or whether they’re just going through the motions and in real need of some serious ignition!
